Why Was Meds for Mom Created?

Meds for Mom was created out of a personal need that our pharmacists discovered firsthand in their own families. Ann Arbor Professional Pharmacy's own pharmacists Nathan Worthing and Ahed “Ed” Salamen share their personal stories that will likely resonate with your own.

"I personally watched how difficult it was for my mom to be the sole caregiver for my 94-year-old grandmother. Every day, she was responsible for feeding, cleaning, and attending to all of my grandmother's basic healthcare needs.

One of her key daily tasks was making sure my grandmother took all of her medications on time and in the right order. Each morning, my mom would painstakingly organize all of my grandmother's pills in little glass bowls, making sure that some were given before breakfast, some were given after breakfast, and some were cut in half and given later in the day. This constant chore created a lot of stress and worry for my mom. She was always concerned that she did not give the right medication at the right time, or worse, had already given a medication and was accidentally giving a second dose.

An equally difficult chore was getting the medications from the local pharmacy.  She would often visit the pharmacy multiple times a week, contending with insurance problems, refill issues, and drug shortages. In addition to all of this, my mom was also taking several of her own medications to manage a heart condition.

After personally witnessing the stress and toll this took on my mom, I realized how important a long-term care pharmacy service is. It is now my mission to spread the word that pharmacists can do more than just dispense pills –  we can shoulder the stressful task of managing medications with compliance packing, drug reviews, and so much more. That is why Meds for Mom was created.”

Nathan Worthing, Pharmacist

"As a pharmacist, my journey with medication management took on a profoundly personal dimension when I found myself navigating the complexities of my father's health care needs. He was independent, self-sufficient, on the go at all times, but as the years passed, the burden of multiple medications weighed heavily on him. To help ease this burden, I would bring him med packs from the pharmacy and personally pack his medications so that taking his medications was made easier.

One particularly pivotal moment stands out to me. It was truly the moment that got me thinking more seriously about the value of a medication management program. My father had been directed verbally by his doctor to take his diuretic “water pill” twice daily instead of once to help improve his heart function. My father, unfortunately, forgot to relay this critical update to me. I had been diligently packaging his medications into compliance packaging, but this crucial adjustment was overlooked. The consequences were dire. Without the necessary adjustments to his medication packaging, my father's health gradually deteriorated, resulting in loss of mobility due to water retention in his feet, labored breathing, and ultimately culminating in an emergency hospitalization.

This experience was an eye-opener. It highlighted the essential need for a comprehensive medication management program, one that fosters direct communication between patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers. Meds for Mom is built on this foundation. It is not merely about organizing pills; it is about creating a safety net for families. It is about ensuring that patients can remain safe and cared for at home, avoiding the turmoil and potential dangers of re-hospitalizations.

Through this program, we strive to bridge the gap between medication adherence and holistic patient care. By collaborating closely with physicians and providing ongoing support, we can empower families to navigate medications with confidence, ensuring that no vital instructions are lost in conversation. It is my hope that Meds for Mom will not only ease the burden of medication management but also foster a sense of security and peace of mind for families facing similar challenges.

My experience providing care for my father has profoundly shaped my approach to medication management. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of health and the critical importance of communication and support in caregiving. Meds for Mom is my commitment to making a difference, one family at a time, ensuring that all patients receive the same comprehensive care I put into place for my very own."
